Thief steals five tons of glacier ice to cool drinks

A man suspected of stealing five tons of ice from the Jorge Montt Glacier, in Patagonia, was caught in the act and arrested by the authorities of Chile.

Last Friday the police intercepted a refrigerated truck with an ice shipment worth around $4500.

The booty was transformed into ice sculptures and used to refresh whiskeys, rums and cocktails in bars in the capital, Santiago.

According to the Guardian, the man is accused of theft, but may also be charged with violation of national monuments.

This happens at the same time that scientists acknowledge that Jorge Montt glacier shrinks more than 500 meters per year, making it one of the most significant losses worldwide.
